December Improvisations, 2013

I had a crazy idea for this holiday season: I'm going to challenge myself to create a recording a day, to give my fans, friends, and family something hand-made by me to enjoy this month.  It's a busy month, so I'm not sure how long I'll be able to stay with this concept, but I'm going to give it a shot!

"Midwinter Fire" is my first offering... This piece arrived totally spontaneously tonight (December 1st), after spending the day with my daughter crafting a medieval English-style longbow, using only hand-tools.  Not my usual sort of project!  I think the experience gave birth to a bit more rugged, aggressive musical imagery than the usual seasonal fare.

Each place has its own weather-relationship with the winter holidays...  I grew up in Alaska, so we always expected snow for Christmas, and sometimes some pretty cold weather too.  Whereas in the Portland, Oregon area, the outdoor manger scenes are more often dripping with the winter rains than coated with snow.  This is my tribute to the best of Christmas in the Northwest.
